Silchar: Forest personnel in Assam’s Cachar district have seized endangered animals and birds from a vehicle coming from Mizoram, officials said on Wednesday.
A kangaroo, six turtles, three turtles and two monkeys of Cachar Forest Division were rescued in Silchar after stopping the vehicle at Lailapur Forest sub-beat during routine checking on Tuesday night.
Officials said the truck, suspected to be carrying illegal wood, was stopped at Lyallpur and forest personnel noticed a strong odor from the vehicle while checking.
On questioning the driver said, it was coming from rotten fruits.
Forest personnel were not convinced and when they searched the vehicle, animals and birds were found inside the coaches and plastic packets.
Two persons identified as Narasimha Reddy and Navnath Tukaram Daigude have been detained.
During interrogation, both the persons revealed that the consignment had left for Guwahati.
DFO Cachar Forest Division Sanidev Chaudhary has directed the Forest Range Officer of Haithang Range, Dholai, De Deori to investigate the matter and ensure that the health of the animal is monitored by local veterinarians.
