London: Audiences were allowed to attend a sporting event in England for the first time since March, when Coronavirus was banned in a cricket match between Surrey and Middlesex at the Oval before a planned comprehensive reopening of the stadiums in October The measures were tested.
Alternate rows were used in two stands and advisory signs were on show for a friendly match watched by 1,000 people, with a two-seat gap between family groups of a maximum of six.
The stadium in south London had a limited number of members.
Surrey Chief Executive Officer Richard Gold said the club received 10,000 calls for available venues within an hour of tickets being offered to members.
“The sun is shining, cricket is happening and people are looking happy,” Gold said. “I hope it’s not going to happen once. I think it depends on how good it is.
“We’ve got a lot of people from the government and security officials, and I think they will keep an eye on it and take a decision and hopefully if it gets fixed it can speed things up.”
Some spectators will also be allowed the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield from Friday as part of a government scheme to return fans. The spectacular Goodwood Horse Racing Festival on Saturday is also part of the scheme.
