Colombo: Sri Lanka “Sold” 2011 World Cup Final In India, the country’s former sports minister said on Thursday, reviving one CricketThe most explosive match fixing controversy.
In 1996, Mahindanand Aluthgamge, who was the then Minister of Sports, alleged that the final was the second senior man to be decided after World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga.
“Let me tell you today that we sold out the 2011 World Cup final,” Aluthgamge told Sirasa TV. “Even when I was the sports minister, I had the same belief.”
From 2010 to 2015, Sports Minister and Minister of State for Renewable Energy and Power, Aluthgamge said that he did not want to disclose the conspiracy at that time.
He said, “In 2011 we were going to win, but we sold the match. I think I can talk about it now. I am not adding players, but some classes were involved.”
Sri Lanka lost the match to Mumbai Wankhede Stadium By six wickets. Indian players have denied any wrongdoing.
Ranatunga, who was at the stadium as a commentator, first called for a probe into the defeat.
“When we lost, I was upset and I was suspicious,” he said in July 2017. “We should investigate what happened to Sri Lanka in the final of the 2011 World Cup.”
Ranatunga said, “I can’t reveal everything now, but one day I will. Inquiries must be made,” the players said that “dirt” cannot be hidden.
Sri Lanka, batting first, scored 274-6 in 50 overs. He appeared in a commanding position when Indian superstar Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed for 18.
But India changed the game dramatically, thanks partly to poor fielding and bowling from Sri Lanka, which were led by Kumar Sangakkara.
Sri Lankan cricket has been regularly involved in corruption controversies, including claims of match fixing ahead of the 2018 Test against England.
Earlier this month, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board said that the International Cricket Council was investigating three unnamed former players over alleged corruption.
Sri Lanka formulated a strict strategy in November to tighten match-fixing and sports betting restrictions.
Another former sports minister, Harin Fernando, has said that Sri Lankan cricket was portrayed as “from top to bottom”, and the ICC considered Sri Lanka to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world.
Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Dilhara Lokuhetge was suspended in 2018 for limited-overs league-related corruption.
He was the third Sri Lankan charged under the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code after former captain and former chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya and former fast bowler Nuwan Zoysa.
Jayasuriya was found guilty of failing to cooperate in the match-fixing investigation and getting banned for two years. Zoya was suspended for match-fixing.
