500 volunteers fighting a fire on the highest mountain in Africa

NAIROBI, Kenya: Tanzanian officials say 500 volunteers are trying to set fire to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Flames can be seen from miles away.
A statement from Tanzania National Parks said on Tuesday that volunteers had managed to limit the spread of the fire. Spokesperson Pascal Shellutte said the still-burning area is known as Kifunica Hill.
He said the cause of the fire has not yet been established. The head of Tanzania National Park, Alan Kizazi, said the fire has consumed 28 square kilometers of vegetation.
The officials assured the tourists their safety. The mountain is popular with hikers and climbers.
Kilimanjaro mountain is the tallest single-free mountain in the world with an altitude of 19,443 feet (5,926 m).
