NEW DELHI: The government has released the source code of Aarogya Setu Android App on GitHub. The developer community can review the source code of India’s COVID-19 contact-tracing app and understand how the entire process works and what personal information is processed through the app. The source code of the iOS version of the application will be released within the next two weeks along with the server code. The app has been officially developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under the guidance of NIC.

The Aarogya Setu app is available in iOS, KaiOS (for JioPhone) and even IVRS forms, which enable feature phone and landline users to register on the platform. Ajay Prakash Sahni, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), said during a press conference that 98% of the users of Arogya Setu are on Android and thus, the source code for the Android app is being released first. “Going forward, the source code for iOS and KaiOS apps will also be released,” he said.

He stressed that the Arogya Setu app is based entirely on self-evaluation of users and that no phone number or patient name has been stored or shared with anyone. “The app exchanges anonymous device IDs and the data remains on the phone itself,” he said.

At the end of last week, the terms of service and privacy policy of Arogya Setu were also changed. Among other changes, the app will no longer suspend a user if it fails to follow the app’s terms of service. The revised terms remove the restriction on tampering and reverse-engineering, and adds contact information in case the user reports a defect / false case.

According to the government, the Arogya Setu app has been downloaded by over 11 crore users across India. It was launched in April.
