According to Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Rabi food production in the country is expected to be better than the previous year’s record of 153.27 million tonnes including wheat in the current year 2020-21.
Rabi (winter) crops are under sowing. Rabi sowing begins in October immediately after the harvesting of Kharif (summer) crops. Wheat and mustard are the major rabi crops. The crop year runs from July to June.
Speaking to PTI, Tomar said that the country’s agricultural sector performed well during 2020 as food production increased and proved to be of relevance to hard-working farmers despite the Kovid-19 epidemic.
He said, “This year, we hope that there will be better food production in the Rabi season as compared to last year (same season).”
For the 2020-21 crop year, the Center has targeted a record foodgrain production of 301 million tonnes, of which 151.65 million tonnes is expected to come from the rabi season.
Apart from this, the Minister said that progress in recent government initiatives including two new agricultural laws on marketing, formation of 10,000 FPOs (Farmer Producer Organizations), Agricultural Infrastructure Fund of Rs 1 lakh crore will also benefit farmers and boost the area .
“I hope that the hard work of farmers and pro-farmer policies of the Modi government will strengthen the agriculture sector. The sector will also benefit from new reforms.
According to official figures, the area under wheat sowing has increased by 4 per cent, which is 325.35 lakh hectare so far this Rabi season, while the area under pulses increased by 5 percent to 154.80 lakh hectare due to better monsoon rains.
Coverage of paddy was reduced from 15.47 lakh hectare to 14.83 lakh hectare in the same period last year.
The area under coarse cereals was 45.12 lakh hectare so far this Rabi season, compared to 49.90 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. However, the area sown for oilseeds was 80.61 lakh hectare from 75.93 lakh hectare a year ago.
Total sowing under various rabi crops has increased from 603.15 lakh hectare to 620.71 lakh hectare.
According to the government’s fourth advance estimate, in the 2019-20 crop year, the country’s total food grain production was recorded at 296.65 million tonnes.
