Sources said that seven senators who had affixed stamps in the name of Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani during the voting for the post of Senate Chairman have been identified.
According to sources, the mystery of the rejection of seven votes cast in favor of Gilani, the joint candidate of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), has now been cleared. All the senators who had stamped the name of PDM candidate Gilani have now come forward and informed the party leadership as to why they stamped the name of the candidate. A report in this regard has been submitted to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari.
Citing the report, sources said that the senators asked the election staff about the voting procedure and told them to put a stamp in the name of the candidate of their choice inside the box. The senators told the PPP leadership that there was no illegal bias behind their decision to seal the name of their candidate. The report said that all members of the PML-N also voted for Gilani.
Bilawal has said that PDM had looted its votes in the Senate elections. He said the vote-rigging was an attempt to divide the PDM, but was thwarted. He said that this issue would be raised at every forum.
In a related development, Gilani met former President Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in Islamabad on Saturday. He discussed the professionalism of canceling seven votes during the Senate elections. He decided in the meeting that the cancellation of votes would be challenged in the Islamabad High Court on Monday. A legal team comprising Farooq H Naik, Nayyar Bukhari and Sardar Latif Khosa was also formed to deal with the matter.
