New York: Former champion Angelique Kerber returned to action for the first time in seven months and reached the second round of the US Open by beating Australian Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-4 on Monday.
The 17th-seeded German, who had not entered the competition since the fourth round of the Australian Open, made a shaky start on serve and fared better in the 88-minute match at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Curber, who won the Grand Slam three times at Flushing Meadows in 2016, traded a break with Tomljanovic in the first four games of the match and then made his move to handle the match.
The German Southeastern held all three break-point opportunities to 5-4 and then served love to grab the first set.
In the second, Kerber settled in a groove and broke his opponent twice before sealing at his third match point when a Tomjanovic forehand left for a long time.
The COVID-19 pandemic shutdown in March is the first Grand Slam of the US Open since global tennis.
