Antidepressants help stop the growth of cancer cells: a study

Washington: New research shows that the antidepressant Sert Line helps stem the growth of cancer cells.
The substance works on a metabolic addiction that allows different types of cancer to grow.
It is denoted by a the study Cell cultures and lab animals performed by KU Leuven’s various research labs. Their findings were published in the American Association for Cancer Research’s journal Molecular Cancer Treatment.
Cancer cells use a variety of biological mechanisms to accelerate their growth. In breast cancer, leukemia, skin cancer, brain tumors and some types of lung cancer, malignant cells produce large amounts of serotonin and glycine, two amino acids. This product promotes the growth of cancer cells to such an extent that they become accustomed to serine and glycine.
“This procedure is an interesting goal because cancer cells are so dependent on it,” said Professor Kim D. Kerrsmaker, head of the Laboratory for Disease Mechanisms at Cancer (LDMC).
“Healthy cells use this method to a lesser extent and also remove serine and glycine from food. This is not enough for cancer cells, however, it means that they start producing more. If we can stop this production, we will be able to fight cancer without affecting healthy cells, “added Carersmaker.
To find a substance that could affect the synthesis of serine and glycine, the researchers used a database of existing drugs. In the first phase, Professor Bruno Chemo’s research group at the Center for Microbial and Plant Genetics (CMPG) tested 1,600 substances on yeast cells.
“Because there are yeasts, or molds, which depend on the same method,” explains research coordinator Dr. Karen Thevison. “Some yeasts make these amino acids to protect themselves from antifungals. In addition, you can easily grow yeast cells, which allows you to test many different substances. ۔
Screening showed that the anti-depressant sert line was the most effective substance. “Other studies have already indicated that sertraline has a specific anti-cancer activity, but no explanation has yet been found,” said researcher Shoni Garretts (LDMC and CMPG). And mention Low Campaign (LDMC).
“in this the studyWe have been able to prove that the Sertrin line inhibits the production of serine and glycine, which slows down the growth of cancer cells. We also found that this therapist is effective in combination with other therapeutic agents. In a study of mice, we found that serotonin, in combination with other therapies, severely inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells. ”
Considerable ability
“Now that we’ve been able to identify this method for breast cancer, we can start examining other types of cancer that are accustomed to the serine and glycine synthesis,” says Professor de Caresmaker. “This is the case with T-cell leukemia, for example, but also in some types of brain, lung and skin cancers. They are better. ”
“These are, in fact, the results of experimental research, not clinical studies, but we can be optimistic about its potential. That’s the decent thing to do, and it should end there. ”
