At least 13 people were killed and five others injured when a passenger van collided near the Super Highway on the outskirts of Karachi.

The speeding van was coming from Hyderabad to Karachi when its tie rod broke, causing the van to overturn and then catch fire.

According to the motorway police, the accident took place near Nooriabad. About 20 people were in the van, 13 of whom were reported dead.

A one-year-old girl miraculously survived the crash and the van driver survived, motorway police said.

According to Saad Edhi of the Edhi Foundation, relief efforts have been completed. Thirteen bodies have been recovered and five people have been rescued in critical condition.

The driver of the van said in a statement to the motorway police that the bonnet of the oncoming vehicle came out and hit the van’s windscreen. “After the bonnet hit the windscreen, I couldn’t control the car,” he said.
