New Delhi: In almost all districts across the country, by the end of next year, all farmers will get an automated weather center (AWS) to provide farm-specific weather and soil-related advice. The Center has decided to expand its ongoing program from 200 districts having ‘Krishi Vigyan Kendra’ (KVK) to 721 districts.
These are specialized centers of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Agricultural Universities to provide agricultural extension services to 721 KVK farmers. Agro Meteorological Advisory Service is currently being provided by the India Meteorological Department under the Rural Agricultural Seasonal Service Scheme. Under the scheme, medium-range weather forecasts (up to five days) are released at the district level.
“Currently, we have AWS in 130 districts. Additional 200 districts are being covered under the first phase. The first phase will be completed in the next few months, ”M Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences
