Baby elephant died suddenly just before 2nd birthday

SYRACUSE: An elephant at the Syracuse Zoo died of a virus just before his second birthday.
The Rosamond Giffords Zoo in Syracuse on Wednesday announced the death of an Asian elephant calf, Ajay (Ah-JYE). He died of the Elephant Endothiliotropic Herpes Virus, which puts young elephants at a higher risk.
Ajay was the second calf of his mother, gardener, and father, doctor.
His 5-year-old brother Battoo’s blood samples tested positive for the virus last week, and the zoo said it began to aggressively treat him, though he showed no symptoms.
Staff also supervised Ajay, who was asymptomatic until Tuesday morning when the staff noticed swelling under his eyes and blackened on his tongue.
“ Within two hours, despite the tireless efforts of the zoo and Cornell veterinary staff, he was gone, ” zoo director Ted Fox said. “ That’s how terrible this disease is, especially with young elephants. When it is hit, it is hit hard. ”
The virus is believed to occur naturally in elephants and can be activated without warning, the zoo said. The zoo lost another calf to the virus in 2003.
Ajay, whose name was chosen in an online vote, recalled how influential and active he was. Ajay means “ invincible ” in Sanskrit, the zoo said.
He would have been two years old on 15 January.
