To inspire Saurabh Suman, a government school teacher in Bihar, to see the difficulties of a differently-abled boy, to innovate for different people and to incorporate innovation in education at the school level inspired.

Journey towards innovation

The prototype and model made by computer science teacher Saurabh at Lalit Narayan Laxmi Narayan Project Balika Uch Videhalaya, Triveniganj, Supaul and his students attracted the attention of district administrative officials during official visits to the school. “My journey of innovation in education and its implementation in real life started after a student told me about the problems faced by his different sibling. The boy used to cry to communicate with his family which compelled me to think of something new, ”says the 37-year-old school teacher.

Saurabh and his students won the Best Model at the East India Science Fair 2018 in Kolkata to represent a model on transportation and communication. He also made a chip-able stick for the blind. “A stick called ‘smart stick’ alerts when any obstacle is encountered,” says Saurabh. He was initially nervous to be stationed in a village, but now feels grateful for the job that gave him opportunities to sharpen his skills. “Sometimes adversity lets us think differently,” he says.

He thanked his school principal for completing the innovative projects on campus. Saurabh also thanked the social media platform ‘Teachers of Bihar’, which offered him to communicate with his colleagues located in different districts to exchange ideas.

Born and raised in Chhapra, a city in Bihar, he is building bridges to praise Saurabh. However, it has pressurized them to think of unique ideas to encourage students, most of them from disadvantaged sections.

The challenges

With regular participation in national level competition and accolades, students and their parents began to recognize them. Saurabh says, “Initially, it was difficult for me to allow parents to attend their daughters because they are required to travel to different cities.” Following COVID-19, they developed a chip-enabled i-card that detects the flow of social distance norms. “People wearing i-cards get a warning if social disturbances around the user are not followed. This is especially important for the visually impaired, ”he says.
