Bilawal hopes the court will not allow the Senate election through an open ballot

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Monday said that the government was sending the wrong message to the country as well as the outside world.

Talking to media, Bilawal said that his party has decided to give the government a difficult time in the upcoming Senate elections. He said that it was always easy to cast one’s vote as per the dictates of one’s conscience. He said that some members of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would not vote for their party in the upcoming Senate elections even if the elections were held through open referendum. He said that Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) would contest against the government in the Senate elections. He said that PPP wants to fight against the government while remaining in the system.

The PPP chairman said that the incompetent government was trying to fix the match before the Senate elections and make the Upper House elections controversial. He said that what was done in the 2018 general elections in the Senate elections is being repeated. He said that this policy could bring controversy in the parliament as well as the court. He said that the right to secret ballot was the basic right of the voters in every election, but the government was attacking the right to secret ballot of MPAs.

Bilawal said opposition parties believed in electoral reform, but the government did not want free and fair elections. He said the government had plenty of time for electoral reform, but had not done so. He said the ruling PTI was thinking that it would not face stiff competition in the Senate elections and when it realized that the PDM would give it a hard time, it resorted to open elections. He said that the PTI leadership was well aware of the fact that party members were not happy with them. He said that PTI knew that change in the electoral process was a constitutional process and the constitution could not be amended by a presidential ordinance.

The PPP chief said he hoped the court would not allow the Senate election through an open ballot. He said that PPP would challenge the Presidential Ordinance in the Supreme Court and the Senate elections would be held in accordance with the Constitution. He said the opposition would not allow the PTI’s ‘conspiracy’ to succeed. He said that the National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies should be closed down if legislation was to be enacted by the courts. He said that the decision of the government to hold the Senate elections through open referendum was very irresponsible. He said that the ‘facilitators’ of the PTI government should understand this. He said he hoped the court would rule in accordance with the constitution.

Bilawal said the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was being used for political purposes. He said that many of the ruling PTI legislators were ready to vote against their own party in the Senate elections. He said the PDM would give the government a tough time even if the elections were held through open voting.
