LahoreThe Multi Sectoral Nutrition Center (MSNC), Planning and Development Board, Government of Punjab, along with development partners, hosted the provincial celebration of Global Breastfeeding Week 2020.
Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year in more than 120 countries by governments and development partners. The theme of this year’s Breastfeeding Week is “Help Breastfeeding for a Healthy Planet.” The theme focuses on protecting and promoting women’s access to skilled breastfeeding advice and sensitizing the public on the importance of breastfeeding during the Cove 19 epidemic.
The event was attended by all the major stakeholders, including distinguished representatives including Dr. Yasmeen Rashid, Minister of Health, GPB, Dr. Sohail Thaqleen, Member Health Nutrition and Population / Executive Director, MSNC, P.O. A&D Board, representation of the Federal Ministry of Planning Commission, Development includes partners including UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA, DFID, SUN, NI, WHO as well as NGOs.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Yasmeen Rashid, Minister for Health, Government of Punjab, said, “Multi-functional breastfeeding makers need supportive measures at different levels in different departments. Breastfeeding is not only the responsibility of the mother, it is the collective responsibility of the family, society and government to provide opportunities and environment for breastfeeding mothers. Promoting malnutrition and breastfeeding is the current government’s top priority agenda. I believe that it is important to counter high-level commitments to effective policies, strategies and plans that benefit the people. He lauded the leadership and commitment of the Chairman P&D Board, Mr. Hameed Yaqub Sheikh, in setting up the Multi Sectoral Nutrition Center (MSNC) with a new vision and expanding its scope. He said that MSNC would guide the department through various sectoral approaches and international best practices.
Dr. Sohail Thaqleen, Member HNP, P&D Board, said that the Sustainable Development Goals specifically address the need to eradicate all forms of malnutrition by 2030. This can only be achieved when no child, woman or man is left behind, no matter how difficult and challenging it is. He said there was an urgent need to educate individuals, families, communities, healthcare providers, policy makers and the general public about the importance of breastfeeding. He paid tributes to the Chairman P&D Board Mr. Hameed Yaqoob Sheikh and Secretary P&D Board Mr. Imran Sikandar Baloch who changed the program and formulated a new roadmap and set the strategic direction for MSNC.
