The British government tightened its line against the Chinese technology company, saying on Monday that wireless carriers in Britain would not be allowed to install Huawei devices in their high-speed 5G networks.
The deadline is part of a British government roadmap laying out with draft legislation to remove “high risk” equipment suppliers that aim to tighten telecommunications security requirements.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government in July banned Huawei from playing a role in building Britain’s next-generation mobile phone network over security concerns arising from US sanctions. Britain and other European countries have begun to line up after US allies banned whitewashing for fear that their devices could be used to facilitate electronic espionage by China’s communist rulers.
The telecom operators were ordered to stop buying Huawei 5G equipment by the end of the year and by 2027 the company was ready to take out any existing gear from their systems.
While the banning operators will have to stop installing Huawei gear, the latest announcement clearly ends the deadline – making it harder for them to stockpile equipment.
Huawei declined to comment. It has previously denied US accusations and said the UK ban was politically motivated.
“Today I am working a clear path to completely remove high-risk vendors from our 5G network,” said Digital Secretary Oliver Daddon. “This will be done through new and unprecedented powers to identify and ban telecommunications equipment which is a threat to our national security.”
The Telecommunications (Security) Bill, which is set for debate in Parliament on Tuesday, requires tougher security standards for 5G wireless and fiber optic networks and threatens heavy fines for companies that follow the rules Does not do.
The government is setting up a strategy to diversify its telecom equipment suppliers, including a research laboratory and investment in open radio standards technology. Huawei has few rivals, including Nokia of Finland and Ericsson of Sweden, who fear that relying on so few companies to supply a weak infrastructure network is open to vulnerabilities.
