BSEB 2020: Government school teacher’s daughter tops among girls, aspires to become a doctor

A bookworm to the core, Arval girl Julie Kumari is deeply interested in mathematics

Even as the boys dominated the Bihar Board’s tenth grade merit list, Arwal girl Julie Kumari made it to the top three, scoring 478 out of 500 as she ranked third in Bhojpur’s Shubham Kumar and Shared with Rajvir of Aurangabad with 95.6% marks. Julie topped only 10 girls, making it to the top 10 rank, while 31 boys made it to the top ten out of a total of 41 students.

A common book worm, a student of a girl’s high school in Arwal district – about 80 km south of Patna – will dedicate 15 hours daily to prepare for her exam. It helped that his father Manoj Kumar Sinha, a government school teacher, was his driving force, while Mata Lalti Devi, a housewife, encouraged him to “bring name and fame to the family”.

Julie lived up to her expectations without feeling pressured, examining the chapters in depth, working her way through the monastery, engaging in self-study to improve her favorite subjects, and concepts. “I tried to study NCERT books well, and solve mock test papers from question bank. I was on my fifth amendment until I passed the exam, ”Julie recalls.

On any given day, one of her three sisters is a student of a government polytechnic in Darbhanga, who will help her in science subjects, while her English teacher father will address her doubts and questions. “Sex has never been an issue in my home and academics are everything. This is what inspired me to dedicate wholeheartedly, ”Julie said while speaking to Education Times.

In the future, she dreams of being a doctor “to alleviate the sufferings of the underprivileged in the rural belt”.

A staunch fan of emotional Bollywood numbers and television news, social media has never been on his priority list. The Bihar girl says, “I chat with my family and draw when the mood is.”

Julie is among 14,94,071 students appearing in the BSEB exam this year, of which 7,29,213 were boys and 7,64,858 were girls. Majority of the students who passed the examination have secured 5,24,217 marks in the second division. First 4.04 lakh passed in first and 2.75 lakh in third division. This year Himanshu Raj scored 481 out of 500 in Bihar Board’s Class 10 examination, followed by Durgesh Kumar who finished third with 480 marks.
