New Delhi: Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved six and a half decade old amendment Essential Commodities Act To destroy food items, including grains, lentils and onions, a step that will transform the agricultural sector and help increase farmers’ income.
The Cabinet also approved (The Farming Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020 ‘) to ensure barrier-free trade in agricultural produce.
The government also approved the ‘Kisan (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement’ on Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Ordinance, 2020 to empower farmers with processors, aggregators, wholesalers, large retailers and exporters.
Announced Cabinet decisions, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, “It will go a very long way while helping the farmers of India agricultural sector. ”
He said that private investors would be apprehensive of excessive regulatory intervention by the proposed amendment of the Essential Commodities Act.
Tomar stated that the ‘Agricultural Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020’ would promote barrier-free inter-state and inter-state trade and commerce outside the physical premises of the markets notified under the State Agricultural Produce Marketing Act.
“This is a historic step to open up widely regulated agricultural markets in the country,” he said.
