Health officials said San Francisco: California reported a one-day single increase of more than 20,000 new coronovirus cases, surpassing the previous high of 18,350 the previous week.
California’s Department of Public Health confirmed 20,759 new cases on Wednesday, raising the state’s overall infection to 1,245,948, Xinhua reported.
But officials said that “the numbers do not represent day-to-day changes as these results include cases from the past to the present.”
Also on Wednesday, the state’s death toll rose to 19,324, with 113 additional deaths.
California, home to nearly 40 million residents, became the second US state to reach serious milestones of 1 million confirmed cases last month.
The state has a seven-day positivity rate of 7.3 percent and a 14-day positivity rate of 6.9 percent, compared to 6.5 percent and 5.9 percent a week earlier.
A total of 9,365 people are currently hospitalized due to the virus in the state. More than 2,100 of them are now in the intensive care unit.
Officials said that “we are experiencing the fastest growth in the state in cases seen so far – faster than what we experienced in the epidemic and early this summer”.
He noted that if the virus continues to spread at this rate, it could quickly affect the state’s health care system and cause “disastrous results”.
