New Delhi: Union Defense Secretary Ajay Kumar has tested positive for Kovid-19 amid uncertainty in the development of the country’s top defense establishment in the South Block at Raisina Hill campus.
Sources said that Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and some other top military and civilian officials did not appear in their offices on Wednesday after reports of a test of positive shock waves sent down the corridors of Kumar’s South Block.
“Extensive contact tracing and major disinfection of offices is underway in South Block. There is a list of about 30 people who have come in contact with the Secretary of Defense in the last 30 days. “They have been asked to go into self-quarantine,” said a source.
Defense Ministry spokesman A Bharat Bhushan Babu declined to comment on the matter when contacted by TOI. Kumar, who was a 1985-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, received repeated calls. The defense minister’s office, however, confirmed that Singh had not visited South Block on Wednesday, but said he was “not in quarantine” at his official residence.
The Secretary of Defense is part of almost all meetings called by the Minister, while also regularly holding talks with the military brass. His office is located on the first floor of South Block in close proximity to the minister’s office.
Office of the Chiefs of the Army and Navy, General M. M. Narwana and Admiral Karambir Singh are some distance away. Although the office of General Bipin Rawat, the first chief of the defense staff, is temporarily housed in the basement of the South Block, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal R KS Bhadoria sits in the nearby Air Force Building.
