DG NADRA removes Karachi over fake CNIC scandal

Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Friday appointed Director General NADRA Karachi as OSD after revealing a fake Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) scandal, 24 News News HTV Channel reported.

Taking note of this scandal, the Home Minister has directed DG NADRA Karachi Col (retd) Ajam Khan to resign from the post at once and make him OSD.

The Interior Ministry has also issued a notification in this regard.

Earlier, the Federal Investigation Agency had traced 100 Pakistani passports illegally issued to Afghan nationals and arrested seven people. According to sources, the FIA’s anti-corruption cell has launched an investigation into the illegal passport scam on a tip-off. The agency also collected evidence and arrested an official working as a facilitator from the passport office in Islamabad. The FIA ​​Peshawar uncovered the fraud when Pakistani citizens whose fingerprints and identity numbers were stolen and used to issue passports reached out to authorities and complained.

Sources said that the FIA ​​is currently conducting five inquiries and it is expected that more details will come to light during the arrest of the arrested persons.

In January, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid told the media that the government had revoked 200,000 computerized national identity cards (CNICs) obtained by Afghan citizens. He said the cards were issued on fake documents. He also said that 1.5 million Afghan refugees have been registered here while 0.8 million Afghan refugees are staying in Pakistan illegally.
