Rome: Novak Djokovic got off to a winning start at the Italian Open on Wednesday, heading for the third round of the clay-court tournament in his first match since his US Open disqualification.
The world number one, first-round runner-up in Rome, defeated the Italian wild card entry Salvatore Caruso 6-3, 6-2.
Four-time Rome winner Djokovic will play fellow Serb Filip Krajinovic or Italian qualifier Marco Cecchinato to make it to the quarter-finals in the next round.
Djokovic was unbeaten in 2020 before a dramatic final 16 default in New York on 6 September as he attacked a line judge with a ball hit in desperation.
Nine-time Rome winner Rafael Nadal will return to the competition on Wednesday after a six-month hiatus associated with the coronovirus epidemic.
The number two seed for a place in the third round, Spaniard Pablo Carreno, the recent semi-finalist at the US Open, plays.
Sixth seeded David Goffin of Belgium lost his second round match 6–2, 6–2 to Croatia’s Marin Cilic in the final of the French Open at Roland Garros from 27 September.
