Washington: US President Donald Trump clashes with a Fox News interviewer over his claims that Democratic challenger Joe Biden plans to discredit the police.
During interviews conducted on the courtyard outside the Oval Office, Trump blamed rising violence on his Democratic leaders in some cities.
“They’ve run them poorly,” Trump said as reporter Chris Wallace pointed out that many cities had been run for decades by Democratic mayors.
“It was always bad, but now it’s completely out of control. And that’s really because they want to save the police, and Biden wants to save the police,” Trump claimed.
“No, sir, he doesn’t,” Wallace countered during a moment of testimony in an exchange shown in a clip tweeted by Fox News on Sunday.
Trump claimed that Biden signed a charter with Left Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders to cut the law enforcement budget.
When contradicted, Trump sought his colleagues to find the policy charter, but could not find any such statement, Wallace said in subsequent comments on Fox.
The movement to rescue police began after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in late May when an officer made him kneel on the neck for about nine minutes.
It has had some impact, with New York cutting its annual police budget by $ 1 billion after weeks of protests in the city.
The full interview is scheduled to air on Sunday.
