The Indian delegation was led by Lieutenant General Harinder Singh, the General Officer of the Leh-based 14 Corps, while the Chinese side was led by Major General Liu Lin, Commander of the Tibet Military District.
It is learned that the Indian delegation pressed for the restoration of the situation in all sensitive areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), besides demanding the withdrawal of additional Chinese troops from the area. LAC is the actual limit.
Sources said India was not expecting any “tangible results” from the meeting, but considers it important as high-level military talks could pave the way for settlement negotiations for a tense standoff.
Saturday’s talks also came a day after the two countries held diplomatic talks, during which both sides agreed to handle their “differences” through peaceful discussions, respecting each other’s sensibilities and concerns.
After the deadlock began early last month, the Indian military leadership decided that the Indian Army would adopt a firm approach to deal with an aggressive posture by Chinese troops in all disputed areas of Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley, Demchok and Daulat Beg Oldi.
Sources said that the Chinese Army is gradually running its strategic reserves in its rear bases near the LAC by filling it with artillery cannons, infantry combat vehicles and heavy military equipment.
He said that China has also increased its presence in some areas along the Line of Actual Control in North Sikkim and Uttarakhand, after which India has also increased its presence by sending additional troops.
The trigger for the face-off was strong opposition from China, the construction of another road connecting the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi road in the Galabar Valley in addition to laying a major road in a Finger Road around Pangong Tso Lake in India.
The Finger area road in Pangong Tso is considered important for patrolling for India. India has already decided not to stop any border infrastructure projects in eastern Ladakh in view of Chinese protests.
The situation in East Ladakh deteriorated after about 250 Chinese and Indian soldiers turned violent on May 5 and 6. A similar incident occurred in Pangong Tso on 9 May in North Sikkim.
The India-China border dispute covers 3,488 km of LAC. China considers Arunachal Pradesh to be a part of southern Tibet while India opposes it.
