London: Former England coach Trevor Bellis praised white-ball captain Eoin Morgan and said his contribution to England cricket as a batsman and a leader has been considerable over the last five years.

After a terrible 2015 World Cup that saw them off the group stage, the Three Lions changed their fortunes to the next edition of the showpiece event and won their first title at the prestigious Lords.

Under Morgan’s leadership, he not only won his first World Cup, but became the number one ODI match in the world.

“Morgs is an intense thinker. He certainly has received the player’s respect and as a coach, you definitely need it,” Bayliss told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Tuffers and Vaughn Show.

“What he has done for the white-ball team over the last five years is outstanding.”

Baylis, who stood as England’s coach in September last year, also recalled his team’s dismissal against New Zealand in a thrilling final.

The two teams could not be separated in regulation time nor in super overs as the boundary calculation helped England end the World Cup trophy drought.

New Zealand needed 2 runs off the last ball in the super over but Martin Guptill was run out, completing the second at the striker’s end.

“I look at it every now and then. Jose Butler takes Bell off, still the hair on the back of your neck stands up. The feeling was over there.”
