Explained: Britain’s points-based visa system and how it can prove beneficial for India – World News

Britain’s new points-based immigration system went live on Tuesday under which European Union (EU) and non-EU citizens will be treated equally like Indians. The government has said the new visa system aims to attract the “brightest and best” around the world and cut cheap, low-skilled labor.

There are several routes available for people to obtain UK visas, including skilled labor routes, global talent routes, graduate routes, and intra-company relocation. Although applications under the new system are now open, people on newly skilled labor visas can live and work in the United Kingdom from 1 January 2021, when the Brexit transition period ends.

UK Home Secretary Preeti Patel said the government has delivered on the promise to end the free movement, withdraw control of the country’s borders and introduce a new points-based immigration system. “Today, we have fulfilled that promise. Our points based immigration system is now live, ”tweeted Patel on Tuesday.

The new system could prove beneficial for India’s skilled workers and students as they would be placed on par with EU citizens. In July, the British High Commissioner to India, Sir Philip Barton, stated that the points-based immigration system would expand the field of sports globally, and would be an advantage for countries such as India.

Here’s how the numeral system works:

Under the new system, marks will be set for specific skills, qualifications, salaries or occupations. A minimum of 70 marks is required to be eligible to apply, some of which are traditional. The points-based system prioritizes the greatest talent worldwide, including scientists, engineers, and academics.

Applicants must have a job offer by an approved sponsor for the appropriate skill level through the skilled visa route. They should also speak English at the required level. These mandatory requirements are for 50 points, and applicants must manage the other 20 points through other specialties required for the visa, which are tradable.

Global Talent Passage is a fast-track visa system to attract the world’s top scientists, researchers and mathematicians. As of November 2020, the government has provided a list of approved approval bodies including those for science and medicine, the Royal Royal Engineering Academy, for Engineering, and the British Academy for Humanity.

Student visa routes will also be point-based and those wishing to study in the United Kingdom have to show a proposal from an approved educational institution. They also have to show that they can speak English and support themselves financially.

The government has provided a graduate visa route to international students who have completed degrees in the UK since the summer of 2021. This route will enable those students to remain in the UK and complete their studies after working at any skill level for two years. .
