Gilgit-Baltistan will become Pakistan’s fifth province after Prime Minister Imran Khan’s announcement on Sunday, Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry said, adding that the region was being given a temporary provincial status.
“One of the reasons I came to Gilgit-Baltistan is to announce that we have decided to give Gilgit-Baltistan temporary provincial status,” the prime minister said during his visit to the GB.
To speak in Geo News Program “New Pakistan”, the Minister of Science said that giving equal rights to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan is essential.
Chaudhry said there had been several deliberate meetings on the issue, adding that 90 per cent of legislation on the region was being taken by consensus.
He said that PPP and PML-N want to start the process after the elections. “Wherever the opposition thinks it can take advantage of the conflict, it sows the seeds of that conflict.”
Speaking on the same show, PPP Senator Sherry Rehman, while endorsing Chaudhry’s statement regarding the rights of the local population, said that it must be given to him.
“The people of Gilgit-Baltistan should get their rights, it is part of our manifesto,” he said. However, he added that the Prime Minister had not deliberately approached anyone on the matter.
Rehman said the issue needed to be discussed, but no such talks had taken place.
