LAHORE: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry on Saturday once again extended an invitation to the opposition to work with the government on electoral and judicial reforms.

He asked Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, to appoint a focal person for this purpose.

Speaking to media in the city on the occasion of the launch of the clothing brand, he reiterated the government’s position that electronic voting machines (EVMs) would address all allegations of electoral fraud.

He said that he could be tried in the next Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections.

The Minister said that besides bar councils in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Multan and Lahore, he would soon be demonstrating EVM in Lahore Press Club and National Press Club where elections are held every year.

The government wants better relations with the opposition.

He said that the opposition has an important role to play in the democratic process and the PPP, PML-N should support the government in approving elections and judicial reforms.

He said a PTI delegation would meet ECP officials on Wednesday and share the government’s policy guidelines on electoral reform.

Fawad said the government has made great strides in improving the country’s ranking on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), adding that the efforts of Federal Minister Hamad Azhar and the Law Ministry were worthwhile. There are compliments.

Shahbaz should fight his case

Asked about allowing Shahbaz Sharif to go abroad, he said the government had placed him on the Exit Control List (ECL), and he should fight his case in court and the government would challenge it.
