SPIELBERG (Austria): Formula One’s governing body has warned Ferrari about the risks of breaking the sport’s COVID-19 protocol and the protective ‘bubble’.
Ferrari drivers Charles Lechler and Sebastian Vettel are seen mixing with people outside their individual team groups.
Lechler returned to his Monaco home after finishing second at last Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, while Vettel was talked into the Red Bull ring paddock, on television without talking to the Red Bull owners.
A FIA spokesperson said, “Ferrari has been issued with a warning and warns that any breaches of the COVID-19 code may be forwarded to Stewards.”
He said the warning was about respecting the group system and the need for social disturbances rather than Lechler’s visit movements.
The COVID-19 code of the FIA states that any time spent outside a closed site is “spent with other members of the same group, with individuals outside that group to keep interactions to a minimum needed.”
Mercedes driver Valteri Bottas, who won last Sunday, also flew home to Monaco after the inaugural race, but remained within his ‘bubble’ seeing only those within his current group – his girlfriend and trainer.
Some team owners also left the Red Bull ring, including McLaren’s Zac Brown.
McLaren team chief Andreas Seidel said of Brown’s absence, “The rules of engagement for senior team members … were planned from the very beginning.”
“Zuck had to return for business reasons, but was following all the necessary measures that are in the context of social disturbances and isolating himself … I see no security risk.”
