Gilani’s announcement as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate has split the anti-government coalition – the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).

On the other hand, the ANP was issued a notice to support the PPP in its efforts to nominate Gilani with the support of senators from the government’s ally BAP.

That number included 21 senators from the PPP itself, 2 senators from the Awami National Party, 1 senator from the Jamaat-e-Islami, 2 independents from FATA and a group of 4 independent candidates led by Senator Dilawar Khan who had split from them. BAP will support Gilani’s candidate.

Following the show cause notice, ANP leaders withdrew from the PDM.
