Half of Bangladesh affected by devastating floods, 119 killed

Dhaka: Nearly half of Bangladesh was hit by floods on Monday, killing 119 people.
According to the report of Xinhua, the daily flood situation of the country’s Disaster Response Coordination Center, the number of victims has been reported in 21 (out of 64) districts since June 30.
Of the victims, 96 people died of drowning, 13 people with snake bite, eight lightning strikes and one diarrhea.
According to another daily disaster status report of the government prepared by the country’s National Disaster Response Coordination Center (NDRCC) under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, floods have affected about 5 million people and displaced hundreds of thousands of families.
The report said that 43,78,732 people have been affected due to floods in 31 of the total 64 districts of the country.
The floods reportedly caused extensive damage to habitats, crops, roads and highways across vast areas of the country.
TV reports have revealed that large parts of the land are under water in some parts of Bangladesh as large rivers have been flowing since last week.
Officials said the water wastage of the hills across the Indian borders has almost worsened the situation in the country.
Minister of State for Disaster Management and Relief M Inamur Rahman said that they have rescued teams of disaster response forces to rescue, distribute relief material and monitor the centers where flood affected families have taken shelter.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked officials to be vigilant to deal with the flooding which comes as another setback at a time when the country is feeling a severe pinch of the COVID-19 epidemic.
