SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh government has set a target of planting about 1.20 crore saplings on 12,000 hectares of land in 41 forest divisions, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said on Tuesday.
Presiding over the 71st state-level ‘Van Mahotsava’ here, Thakur also planted a poplar plant in the premises of The Peterhoff.
The Chief Minister said that the government has launched six new schemes to promote afforestation in the state, including Vidyarthi Van Mitra Yojana, Community Van Samriddhi Yojana, Van Samriddhi Jan Samridhi Yojana, setting up new industries based on cedar needles and forests. Thakur said that in order to make people aware of the rights of the girl child and involve the community in the process of afforestation, the government has launched the ‘Ek Beti Aur Ek Naam’ scheme.
He said that under this scheme, a girl’s family is given five plants, tree guards, a girl’s nameplate, 20 kg of vermi compost and technical information at the time of her birth.
Education Minister Suresh Bhardwaj said that the Forest Department has played an important role in increasing the forests in the state.
He urged the Chief Minister to transfer forests around Shimla city to the Municipal Corporation for their better management and protection.
He said that the education department is helping in the afforestation process by motivating students and teachers to plant saplings.
Forest Minister Govind Thakur said that the Forest Department is making sure that more and more areas of the state are brought under forest cover.
He said that several afforestation schemes have been started in the state and the department is also ensuring the survival of the plant to be planted during that ‘Van Mahotsav’.
