IIIM is in the final stages of validating a new machine-less coronavirus diagnostics kit, as already reported by PTI, which could help the country scale up the Kovid-19 test.
“For Kovid-19, we are undergoing clinical trials. In collaboration with the Ministry of AYUSH and the industry, we are involved in this. Three to four clinical trials in relation to Kovid-19 drugs form 3 to 4. In relation to various plant species. Dr. CS Srinivas Reddy, Director CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), told PTI.
“If they (all the necessary tests) are successful, we can make the medicine available soon”, Reddy said.
“We are definitely getting closer. Many research groups around the world are giving their best to find a treatment for Kovid-19. The discovery of new drugs is a very long and expensive process”, he said.
The director said that reuse of drugs already known to treat Kovid-19 patients is the best option under current circumstances.
He said, “Many academic and industry groups around the world are continuously working. In India, CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) in particular is at the forefront.”
Dr. Reddy, who recently took over as director of IIIM for the next six years, said the first activity that IIIM carried out under him was testing Kovid-19 samples.
“We started the trial in the first week of April in collaboration with the Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu. We have completed more than 40,000 samples so far,” he said.
“We are in the process of increasing the number of samples tested,” he said.
He said that IIIM is in the process of developing a new formulation based on zinc gluconate and natural vitamin C, which comes from Acerola Cherry to enhance immunity.
“It is in cooperation with a company.”
He said that development processes for active drug ingredients (APIs) as part of the reproduction of drugs are underway and that “our scientists have made significant progress on this activity and demonstrated one of the processes to an industry partner in Jammu has gone”.
He said, “We continue to work along these lines and start some new initiatives to solve Kovid-19 related problems. Our scientists and students rose to the occasion and made significant contributions in a short period of time.”
Dr. Reddy said the IIIM laboratory is a unique location for drug discovery based on natural products – all under one roof for plant-based or new chemical unit (NCE) -based drugs.
“The region has a rich biodiversity known for medicinal and aromatic plants. It has a diverse scientific pool with expertise and experience from various functions. I get a lot of opportunities here,” he said. .
He said that IIIM could lead programs of national importance besides existing assets and expand the campus or natural product extracts library and open it up for other research purposes.
He said that IIIM can develop agricultural technologies and commercial farming in the western Himalayan Kashmir Valley and Ladakh regions.
“There are high value medicinal and aromatic plants, (but) they are facing problems in the supply chain, in particular, for international markets. IIIM can put more efforts in that direction ”, he said.
