On Sunday, Prime Minister Imran Khan, in response to a meeting of the Pakistan Democratic Movement in Lahore at the Minar Pakistan Memorial, reiterated his long-held promise that he would “never issue an NRO”.
“Sadly, PDM spent a lot of money, time, effort and utter negligence in risking people’s lives during the rise of COVID-19,” he wrote.
He said that by holding the rally, the opposition parties had shown “little respect” for the safety and welfare of the citizens.
“All this is just to blackmail me into giving NROs to save their looted wealth,” the prime minister said.
He then said: “Let me say it again: I will never give an NRO.”
The Prime Minister added, “Whatever future plans may be made to blackmail the PDM, my message is clear: an NRO will never come from my government no matter what the looters do.”
The 11-party opposition alliance today demonstrated its strength at the Minar Pakistan Memorial in Lahore.
PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz and PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari delivered fiery speeches.
The movement has announced a long march to Islamabad. No definite date has been given, however, Fazlur Rehman set the deadline from late January to early February.
The PDM chief said all opposition parties would “take their resignations with them”.
“We will no longer allow an illegitimate government to rule. We will rest only after it is over.”
