‘Indian cricket fan is worth knowing’: Australia – Gavaskar on Rohit’s absence from Team India’s squad for cricket

Indian cricket fans were shocked when the BCCI announced the squad for Team India’s tour of Australia. Limited-overs captain and Test opener Rohit Sharma’s name was missing from the squad for all three formats. Rohit has missed the last two matches of Mumbai Indians due to foul play and it seems that the decision not to name him in the team was related to his injury. The BCCI official release read “The BCCI medical team will continue to monitor the progress of Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma.”

As the situation worsened, Mumbai Indians posted two tweets that showed Rohit Sharma batting in the nets. Rohit can be seen taking full swing in the nets while batting in a video posted a little after the teams announcement.

It asked former India captain and veteran commentator Sunil Gavaskar some clarity on the whole affair. Gavaskar was speaking on host broadcaster Star Sports during the post match show of the IPL encounter between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Gavaskar said, “We are talking about Test matches, which is one and a half months.”

“And if he is practicing in the nets for Mumbai Indians, honestly I don’t know what kind of injury it is. I think a little transparency, a bit of openness about what exactly is the problem with that, will help everyone, ”he said.

Gavaskar mentioned KXIP opener Mayank Agarwal, who was also sidelined for the last two matches of his franchise, but has been named in the squad for all three formats.

He said, ‘Indian cricket fans are entitled to know more than anything. Franchises, I understand. They do not want to remove their hands. They do not want to give any psychological benefit to the protests. But we are talking about the Indian team here. Mayank Agarwal also for example. For an Indian cricket fan, he should know what happens to his two key players.

Rohit Sharma made a stunning comeback to Test cricket in 2019 as he made his innings in the home series against South Africa and Bangladesh. He was expected to face a rigorous examination in New Zealand, but missed the series due to injury. The Kiwis defeated India 2–0. The tour against Australia is a much awaited one and everyone wanted to see how Rohit would fare when he bats outside India in red ball cricket.
