Rising Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen has pulled out of this month’s successive tournaments in Thailand. The 19-year-old, who claimed five titles in the senior circuit in 2019, including two BWF World Tour Super 100 top honors – SaarLorks Open and Dutch Open, has been advised rest by doctors after suffering a back injury.
PPBA director and former Indian coach Vimal Kumar told PTI, “Unfortunately, Laxman will not be able to play two matches in Thailand during training.”
Thailand will host two Super 1000 events between January 12-17 and January 19-24. The 2018 Youth Olympic Games silver medalist Lakshya will also not be able to participate in the second event due to quarantine protocol.
Lakshya last attended the Denmark Open in October, when she was forced to withdraw from the Saralorlux Open, where she was the defending champion, after her father and coach DK Sen reached Germany for the COVID-19 Tested positive.
The Denmark Open Super 750 and SaarLorks Super 100 were the only two events that can be held since the BWF were forced to suspend following the completion of the All England Championship in March.
Former India coach Vimal said, “The players will have to reach Bangkok by January 4 and then stay in quarantine for a week, so they will not be able to play this time.”
Meanwhile, Indian teams including Olympic hopefuls Saina Nehwal, B Sai Praneeth and Kidambi Srikanth left for Thailand on Sunday to participate in back-to-back BWF World Tour Super 1000 matches.
