Tehran: Iran has issued an arrest warrant and asked Interpol to help detain President Donald Trump and dozens of others, believing the drone attack that killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad to be local The prosecutor said on Monday.
Although Trump poses no threat of arrest, the allegations alleviated heightened tensions between Iran and the United States as Trump unilaterally withdrew Tehran from a nuclear deal with world powers.
Tehran prosecutor Ali Alkasimhar said Trump and more than 30 others who have been accused by Iran of involvement in the Jan. 3 killing of General Qasim Soleimani in Baghdad “murder and terrorism charges”, state-run IRNA News The agency reported.
Alkasimer identified none other than Trump, but insisted that Iran continue its prosecution even after the end of his presidency.
Interpol, based in Lyon, France, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Alkasimer was quoted as saying that Iran requested a “red notice” for Trump and others, representing the highest level of arrest request issued by Interpol. Local authorities request an arrest on behalf of the country that requests it. The notice cannot force countries to arrest or extradite suspects, but may place government leaders on the spot and limit the visit of suspects.
After receiving the request, Interpol meets with the committee and discusses whether to share the information with its member states. Interpol has no need to make any notice public, although some are published on its website.
It is unlikely that Interpol forbids Iran’s request to “undertake any interference or activities of political or nature” as its guideline.
The US killed Soleimani, who killed the Revolutionary Guard’s expeditionary force near Baghdad International Airport, and others in a January strike. This came after months of escalating tensions between the two countries, and Iran eventually retaliated with a ballistic missile attack targeting US troops in Iraq.
