Jaguars burned by wildfires in Brazil are helped back to health

Coru de Goiès: A jaguar collided with a quiet trurt dart, rises with a painful bulge on its banded, burnt claws.
The spotted female, named Amonasi, is one of the most fierce wildlife ever recorded in Brazil’s Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland. A jewel of biodiversity, it is home to the most densely populated population of jaguars anywhere on Earth.
Amansi was one of the lucky ones. Rescued by volunteers, he was brought to a farm in the state of Goas run by an NGO dedicated to protecting endangered wild cats.
She is being treated with cutting-edge medicine: stem cell injection for recovery of burnt tissue and regeneration of new tissue.
Patricia Maillard said, “We hope to have him on all four paws soon, as his quality has been restored.”
Stem cells were taken from Amanci two weeks ago and cultivated in a laboratory before the first injection on Saturday. While she was out, her clothes were changed.
“It makes me angry and sad to see how these animals are suffering,” said Christina Gianni, founder of the Sanctuary of the Knox Institute.
“He imagined himself in his place. It would be like walking barefoot on hot coals,” she said in an interview.
Gianni said he had never seen so much death and pain for wildlife from the blasts in Puntanal this year, and accused the Brazilian authorities of not doing enough to stop the fire.
Pantal, deriving its name from the Portuguese word “swamp”, spans over 150,000 square kilometers (58,000 square miles) in Brazil and also extends to Bolivia and Paraguay.
The fire is the worst since records began in 1998. The flames are feared by the region’s wildlife, which are enriched with tapers, pumas, capybaras and jaguars.
Jaguars used to travel from the southwest of the United States to northern Argentina, but today their range has shrunk. The World Wildlife Fund says that Brazil can capture about half of the estimated 170,000 wild jaguars.
For Amansi, it will be too soon to say when or if she will be able to return to the wild. Meanwhile, she awakens from her sleep, and sets out in her new surroundings.
