New Delhi: On a day when military tensions in East Ladakh rose again between India and China, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said it is important for the two countries to reach an arrangement soon for the peaceful conduct of bilateral relations.
Addressing the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), Jaishankar said that India has been “cognizant” of China’s rise and is affected as an immediate neighbor. “But India is also growing, and it’s just as important to remember,” he said. When asked about the Pakistan-China nexus, the minister said that India, while formulating the policy, misunderstood it.
In recent weeks, as the struggle to lift the Indian economy out of recession began, both PM Modi and Jaishankar have been trying to woo the global industry to increase investment in India.
In response to US trade questions about the recently announced import duty on 100 items from the Indian government, the minister said, “We hope these products will be made in India. Please invest in defense manufacturing in India.” India’s “Indian policy is about enhancing our national capabilities.”
He stressed that the economic reform post Kovid’s way would be to “focus on improving ease of doing business”.
On Indo-US relations, Jaishankar said, “Today we have a level of political confidence that we did not have before.”
