Washington: US President-Elect Joe Biden will nominate California Attorney General Javier Becquerra to head the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), according to several media outlets.
Biden is expected to be announced in the coming days with options for other key health positions, including the head of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Xinhua report reported.
Becerra, 62, has been a member of the US House of Representatives for more than two decades before starting serving as California’s Attorney General in 2017.
She succeeded Kamala Harris, now Vice President-elect, to lead the nation’s largest state Justice Department after being elected US Vice President.
If confirmed, Becerra would become a key official in the country’s fight against the raging coronovirus epidemic, as HHS would be responsible for overseeing the delivery of vaccines in the coming months.
America’s top infectious disease specialist and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci has announced that he will be Biden’s chief medical adviser.
According to Biden, addressing the epidemic, which has infected 14,750,316 people and killed 282,236 people in the US, currently the toughest country in the world, would be a priority for his administration.
Democrats have said they would urge Americans to wear masks for their first 100 days after taking office.
“This epidemic is devastating the country,” Monsef Saloi, head of Operation War Speed, an initiative launched by President Donald Trump’s administration to accelerate the development, manufacturing and delivery of Kovid-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics, Sunday Told CNN. .
“We all need to take precautions, wear our masks, wash our hands, keep our distance, be aware that this virus is a killer,” Slaoui said.
According to US media estimates, Biden garnered 306 electoral votes in the November 3 presidential election, while crossing the 270-vote mark to secure the presidency.
Biden announced the victory and the first installment of his cabinet nominees, including officials for national security and foreign policy.
The General Services Administration has initiated Biden’s formal change in the White House, but despite Trump directing his administration to facilitate the process, has vowed to continue the legal battle to challenge the election results.
