Joe Biden urges ceasefire in Ethiopia’s Tigre region

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden has called for a ceasefire in the wake of escalating violence in the conflict-torn Tigre region of Ethiopia.
“Political wounds cannot be healed with weapons,” the DPA news agency quoted Biden as saying on Wednesday evening.
He said the belligerents in the Tigre region should declare a ceasefire and follow it, and that the Eritrean and Amhara forces should retreat.
“I am deeply concerned by the escalating violence in many parts of Ethiopia and the hardening of regional and ethnic divisions. Widespread human rights abuses in the Tigre, including widespread sexual violence, are unacceptable and must end.
“Families of every background and ethnic heritage deserve to live in peace and security in their country,” the president said.
Biden said the US government’s special envoy to the Horn of Africa, Jeff Feltman, would visit the region again next week to seek a peaceful resolution of the conflicts.
The Ethiopian government launched a military offensive in northern Ethiopia in November 2020 against the Tigre People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which was in power in the Tigre region until then.
Hostilities in northern Ethiopia soon turned into a complex conflict involving neighboring Eritrea.
Ethiopia had long denied that Eritrean troops were present in the conflict-torn region, but then announced in early April that they would be withdrawn.
The Ethiopian military invasion followed years of tension between the TPLF and the central government, in a conflict that prompted hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes and caused widespread destruction.
