Cape Canaveral: Jupiter and Saturn will merge into the Monday night sky, looking closer to each other than Galileo’s time in the 17th century.
Astronomers say the so-called adaptations between the two major planets in our solar system are not particularly rare. Jupiter passes its neighbor Saturn around the Sun every 20 years in its own lap.
But what is approaching is particularly close: Jupiter and Saturn will be separated from our point of view, or one-fifth of the full moon’s width apart, only one tenth of a degree.
They should be easily visible around the world shortly after sunset, weather permitting.
The Northern Hemisphere, the longest night of the season, and the winter toss in the Southern Hemisphere.
“The thing that is most rare is a close harmony that exists in our night sky,” said David Ventraub, a professor of astronomy at Vanderbilt University.
“I think it’s fair to say that such an event can usually only happen once in a person’s life, and I think ‘once in a lifetime’ is a great test of that. Is something rare or special? ”
It will be the closest pair of Jupiter and Saturn since July 1623, when the two planets come closer.
Being so close to the sun, it was almost impossible to see the match.
When Genghis Khan was about to conquer Asia, the union of the two planets in March 1226 was seen very closely and in plain sight.
The toe joint will be the closest pair that has been visible since then.
Saturn and Jupiter have been approaching the southwest sky for weeks. Jupiter – bigger and closer to Earth – is brighter.
“I like to see them come closer and closer to each other and the fact that I can see it from my back porch with my naked eyes!” Virginia Tech astronomer Ninth Arau said in an email.
To see it, get ready right after Monday’s sunrise, looking down at the southwest on the horizon.
The color of Saturn in the upper right of Jupiter will be smaller and less. Telescopes will be needed to separate the two planets.
Despite their appearance, Jupiter and Saturn will actually cover a distance of more than 450 million miles (730 million kilometers). Earth, meanwhile, will be 550 million miles (890 million kilometers) away from Jupiter.
A telescope will capture not only Jupiter and Saturn in the same field of view, but also some of their moons.
Their next super close pair: March 15, 2080.
