Malpuram: The condition of at least 14 passengers of the Air India Express that crashed while trying to land at Karipur Airport in Kerala remains critical, Malappuram District Collector K. Gopalakrishnan gave this information on Sunday.
Eighteen people including pilot and co-pilot AIE Flight From Dubai, lost his life when the plane inspected the tabletop runway at the airport during heavy rains and fell 35 feet down into the valley and broke into two parts on Friday night.
“So far, 49 people have been discharged from various hospitals in Malappuram and Kozhikode. The condition of 14 people remains critical,” Gopalakrishnan told news agency PTI.

The remaining 109 people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals.
Meanwhile, investigators have begun investigating the Boeing-737’s black box to determine the exact cause of the crash.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation in collaboration with flight safety officers and it will take some time before it is completed.

Arun Kumar, head of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), said the country would open the recovered transcripts for international investigators as well as manufacturer Boeing.
Kumar said, “Only after thorough and impartial investigation can we tell what has really happened.”
The 2,700-meter runway at the airport is known as “table-top”, an aviation term for a runway with steep drops at one or both ends.
They leave little room for error should the pilot inspect the runway, either through human error or mechanical failure.
An air traffic control officer familiar with the crash confirmed this version of events, making it unusual for an airport to attempt a landing with a tailwind, commonly used for takeoff.
“Runway Length Calicut Is about 2,700 meters away and the plane touched the ground after crossing 1,000 meters in length, leaving less space to bring the plane to a halt, “the officer, who declined to be named as he spoke to the media Is not authorized to do, told Reuters.
“It was wind and rain and the surface of the runway was wet. The weather is dynamic in such instances.”
“An aircraft typically lands in a headwind and departs as the tailwind increases the speed of the aircraft.”
An Air India spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company has already said that it will provide compensation to the families of the deceased.
The bodies of 16 passengers who lost their lives in the plane crash have been handed over to their families.
The bodies of the pilot and co-pilot of the aircraft were also handed over to their families on Saturday.
Air India said the remains of co-pilot Akhilesh Kumar were cremated on Sunday with all family members and officials of Air India and Air India Express in Mathura.
