New York: Kovid-19 is significantly associated with an increased risk of stroke, according to a study that suggests that patients infected with novel coronaviruses should undergo invasive monitoring for neurological status.
According to the researchers, Kovid-19 infection is a risk factor for acute stroke, including those at the Mount Sinai’s Icon School of Medicine in the US.
In a study published in the American Journal of Neuroradology, scientists assessed patients attending six hospitals in New York City for suspicion of stroke between March and April.
“We conducted a retrospective case-control study of 41 cases and 82 control subjects matching age, sex, and risk factors,” the scientists wrote in the study.
After adjusting for age, sex, and risk factors, scientists found that Kovid-19 infection had a significant independent association with acute ischemic stroke – caused by a clot that blocked a blood vessel in the brain.
Comparing the group of patients with stroke versus non-stroke, they showed significantly higher numbers of patients with Kovid-19 infection among the stroke group after accounting for other known common stroke risk factors.
Researchers believe that patients with Kovid-19 should be evaluated early for acute neurological changes.
Co-author of Mount Sinai Hospital, Puneet Bellani said, “This is the first major peer study to show that Kovid-19 infection is a risk factor for acute stroke.”
“Patients with Kovid-19 should be evaluated early for acute neurological changes, and should work on time in patients suspected of stroke to reduce morbidity and mortality,” Bellani said.
Citing the study’s limitations, the scientists said the study included only 41 patients diagnosed with Kovid-19, adding that further studies could help validate the findings by including a larger population Can.
“Future efforts may assess whether this relationship is true in a large population and with the pathophysiological mechanisms inherent in Kovid-19 that drive this association,” he wrote in the study.
