According to police, renowned religious scholar Maulana Adil Khan was shot dead along with his driver in the Shah Faisal Colony area of ​​Karachi on Thursday.

Adil Khan is the son of the late Saleemullah Khan, former president of the Federation of Arab Schools and is the principal of Farooqi University.

According to police, the scholar was sitting in a Toyota Vigo with a car parked outside the shopping center when the accused on motorcycles approached him and shot him.

A third man, Umair, was also with Maulana Adil and survived the incident, police said. He went inside the shopping center to buy Sweets (Sweet meat)

“He was targeted by motorcyclists. He appears to have been pursued by terrorists,” police officials said.

He further said that 5 cost 9 mm casings were recovered from the site.

Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Memon said three people were on the motorcycle. One landed and fired.

“We are collecting statements from eyewitnesses,” he said.

Memon said that passing through this path is not part of Maulana Adil’s routine.

A heavy contingent of police and Sindh Rangers soon reached the spot and the investigation was carried out with the help of CCTV cameras.

After analyzing the footage, Raja Umar Khattab, in-charge of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), said it showed three people fleeing the scene. “It used to be much closer as a backup,” he said.

He added that it was a conspiracy to incite sectarian violence.

Meanwhile, sources at Liaquat National Hospital, where he was taken, said the scholar had already died when he arrived. According to a hospital spokesman, Maulana Adil suffered two gunshot wounds.

Dr. Sami Jamali, Executive Director, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center, said that the body of Muhammad Maqsood, the driver of the deceased cleric, was brought to the emergency ward of the facility.

Preliminary report to Chief Minister Shah

Inspector General of Police Sindh Mushtaq Mehr has submitted a preliminary report of the incident to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

According to CM Shah’s spokesperson, the report said that Maulana Adil’s car had stopped near the shopping center and a colleague had gone inside for shopping when two unidentified assailants shot at him.

The initial report added that five shots were fired. Umair’s surviving companion is currently in hospital.

The Chief Minister has ordered immediate arrest of the accused. “Some extremist elements want to disrupt peace in the city,” he said.

‘Attack on national security’

Reacting to the development, the Federation of Madrassas said that the attack on Maulana Adil was an attack on the peace and security of the nation.

“The martyrdom of Maulana Dr Adil Khan is an irreparable loss to the Islamic world,” it added.
