MUZAFFARPUR: A childThe attempt to awaken her dead mother from eternal sleep on a railway platform in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, on Wednesday, presented the most poignant picture of the mass migrant tragedy in many states.
A video by Sanjay Yadav, tweeted to a colleague RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Shows the child moving unsteadily over his mother’s body, tugging on a blanket placed over her, and when he fails to wake her, covers her head with him.
As Mother lay still while she lay away from him, announcements continued in the background about the arrival and departure of trains that would arrive in large cities to relieve tens of thousands of people from hunger and hardship. No one else can maintain them.
“This little child does not know that the bedsheet he is playing with is his mother’s shroud which has gone to sleep forever. This mother died of hunger and thirst after being on the train for four days. Who is responsible for this Is. Death in trains? Shouldn’t the opposition ask uncomfortable questions? “Yadav tweeted.
However, the police had a different story to tell.
Ramakant Upadhyay, Deputy SP of the Government Railway Police in Muzaffarpur, said the incident occurred on May 25 when a migrant woman was going from Ahmedabad to Muzaffarpur in a labor train.
He told reporters that the woman was killed in a train going to Madhubani along with her sister and brother-in-law.
“My sister-in-law died suddenly in the train. We had no problem in getting food or water,” the officer said, quoting the deceased’s brother-in-law that he did not name.
He said that on getting the information, the police took down the body and sent it for postmortem.
Citing the brother-in-law of the deceased, Upadhyay said that she was 35 years old and had been in Ahmedabad for the past one year treating “some disease”. “He was also mentally unstable,” he said.
When asked about the cause of continued death, he said “only doctors can tell”.
Unprecedented in magnitude since Partition, there is a huge exodus of migrant workers to many parts of the country.
The still ongoing humanitarian crisis on the highways and railway platforms highlights the disturbing stories of entire families walking hundreds of kilometers with young children in a proper endless march to escape hunger.
People have been found dying of hunger and exhaustion on trucks and in the hollow of concrete mixing plants, and in many cases, before reaching their destination.
