Macular degeneration may increase the severity of Kovid-19: study

Washington: According to a study, people with age-related macular degeneration – an eye disorder caused by the hyperactive immune system – are at greater risk of developing serious complications and dying from Kovid-19.
Supplementation, one of the oldest branches of the immune system, can affect the severity of Kovid-19 disease, researchers at Columbia University in the US said.
The findings, published in the journal Nature Medicine, suggest that existing drugs that disrupt the complement system can help treat severe patients.
Researchers also found evidence that clotting activity is associated with the severity of Kovid-19 and that mutations in some complement and coagulation genes are associated with hospitalization of Kovid patients.

If Kovid-19 complements and affects the severity of coagulation, then people with pre-existing hyperactive complement or coagulation disorders should be more susceptible to the virus, the researchers said.
This prompted researchers to look for Kovid-19 patients with macular degeneration, an eye caused by hyperactive supplementation, as well as common coagulation disorders such as thrombosis and bleeding.
In the 11,000 patients at Columbia University Irving Medical Center with suspected Kovid-19, researchers found that more than 25 percent of people with age-related macular degeneration died, compared to an average mortality rate of 8.5 percent, and approximately 20 percent percent intubation required.
Researchers said that higher mortality and intubation rates cannot be explained by differences in age or sex of patients.
“The supplement is also more active in obesity and diabetes and may help explain, at least in part, why people with those conditions also have higher mortality,” Shapira said.
Researchers said that people with a history of coagulation disorders had an increased risk of dying from Kovid-19 infection.
