According to 24 News News TV channel, Begum Shamim Akhtar, mother of former Prime Minister and top PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif, passed away on Sunday. She was 90 years old.

PML-N vice-president Maryam Nawaz’s grandmother’s death was announced in a tweet by party leader Ataullah Tarar. He also said that Shahbaz’s son Suleiman Shahbaz called him and told him that arrangements were being made to take his grandmother’s body to Lahore for burial.

According to PML-N sources in London, Begum Shamim’s health deteriorated four days ago.

Sources said that his funeral prayers would be offered in London and then his body would be taken to Pakistan for burial.

Sources further said that consultations are underway on the transfer of Begum Shamim’s body to Pakistan and other issues.

Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif’s personal physician has advised the PML-N leader against air travel. According to the 24 News HD TV channel, the doctor said that air travel was not suitable for the PML-N supremo at the moment.

Begum Shamim Akhtar went to London on February 15 this year to meet her son Nawaz Sharif.

According to the TV channel, Shahbaz Sharif burst into tears after hearing the sad news of his mother’s death. The channel reported that there is a possibility that both the father and son, who are in the custody of NAB, may have been released on parole on the orders of the Home Secretary to attend Begum Shamim’s last rites. According to the TV channel, the PML-N leader will be granted parole for bringing the body of the late Shamim Akhtar to Lahore.

Former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar tweeted, “Mian Nawaz Sharif was informed about the death of his wife in jail and today Mian Shahbaz Sharif will also be informed about the death of his mother in jail. Allah Shahbaz Sharif May God help him to bear this trauma. Amen.

It is noteworthy that Nawaz Sharif’s mother Begum Shamim Akhtar first appeared in the media in 2018 when Nawaz Sharif was about to return from London with his daughter just before the 2018 general elections.

Begum Shamim had vowed that her son Nawaz and granddaughter Maryam Nawaz were innocent and were punished for standing up with the slogan ‘Vote for Ezzat Do’. “If (Nawaz and Maryam) are sent to jail, I will go with them,” he added.

In an interview with VOA in 2018, Nawaz Sharif’s mother said: “I have never spoken to the media. This has never been the case in the past. I have never seen such a situation.
