NEW DELHI: On 23 May 1999, former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar smashed 140 against Kenya in the 50-over World Cup.

In the match being played in Bristol, Tendulkar played an unbeaten 140 off just 101 balls to take India to 329/2 in total fifty overs.

It was an emotional match for Tendulkar as it was played against the backdrop of his father’s demise.

India struggled in the World Cup, and with this performance, Tendulkar put India’s campaign on track.

The Man in Blue faced off against South Africa in their first match of the tournament and the team lost due to the heroism of Jack Kallis.

As India prepared to face Zimbabwe in their next game, Tendulkar went home to attend his father’s funeral. India then faced defeat against Zimbabwe and that side needed to win the rest of their three games to qualify for the Super Six stage.

This was when Tendulkar returned to the UK to play a match against Kenya.

Tendulkar was involved in a 337-run partnership for the third wicket with Rahul Dravid in the match against Kenya.

Dravid also brought India to a comfortable position by scoring a century.

After that Debashish Mohanty played for India with the ball in his hand, as he won the Men in Blue by 94 runs with four wickets.

India succeeded in reaching the Super Six, but that side failed to make it to the semi-finals of the 1999 World Cup.

The legendary cricketer has the most runs in the longest format of the game, with 15,921 runs. Along the way, Tendulkar scored the most 51 Test centuries by any player.

Things are no different in ODI cricket as Tendulkar tops the list of most runs in this format. He has scored 18,426 runs in ODIs, including 49 tonnes.

Tendulkar represented the country in six World Cups during his career spanning 24 years. He was part of the 2011 World Cup winning team.
