With the thrust of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to promote digital-education in India, 100 top universities can now offer online courses till 30 May. The announcement is part of the ‘PM E-VIDY’ program for multi-education, for which e-education is being used. The top 100 universities will be allowed to start online courses.

“The recent move will provide greater autonomy to the country’s premier institutions and ensure access, equity and quality education,” says Ravikesh Mishra, chairperson of e-learning, a special center at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Foreign language courses in classical subjects such as Vedic mathematics, Persian language and culture, Arabic and Pali as well as Russian, Indonesian, Korean and Japanese.

Says Mishra, “In the post-Kovid world, online courses will exist alongside offline courses and provide students with a dual option. ”

On the long-term impact of the announcement, the vice-chancellor of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), H Vinod Bhatt, says, “If we want to grow in terms of gross enrollment ratio (GER), the answer is in online education.” Therefore, it is a matter of time for more students to take advantage of this before Internet connectivity and speed improve. ”

MAHE is all set to start online MBA classes from July, “We have put in place a robust system for effective course delivery and quality content. Once the processes stabilize, we plan to diversify into pharmacy, allied health and humanities disciplines with more course offerings.

“Online degree courses developed on the basis of four degree holders: e-tutorials with video, audio, animation and virtual labs; E-content where the emphasis will be on online resource content which can be easily downloaded; Discussion forums related to teacher-student contact and doubt clarification; And assessment through online or certified mode, ”says Mishra.

To ensure wider access to remote interiors, institutions are more likely to use SWAYAM PRABHA channels to make education more specialized.

As time is short, universities are not required to seek any new approval from education regulators and can automatically offer courses online.

The recent announcement is probably based on earlier UGC regulation in 2018. Under the criteria, universities were to be in the top 100 in the NIRF rankings for three consecutive years and had an NAAC score of 3.26 out of 4 for providing education. . Out of the top 100, only 27 universities had met the NAAC score criteria, and even then about 24 universities had advanced the process of applying for approval. Universities were subjected to an in-depth examination of their learning management systems and teaching materials, ”says Atul Chauhan, Chancellor of Amity University, who met the UGC criteria along with six other editions.

“In the current scenario, however, the top 100 universities may be allowed to conduct online degree courses without rigorous examinations and start courses from September,” says Chauhan.
